Inquisition: /* Leafless Golf */

Horseshoe Island is located at A7. It has an Overworld Check, two lookout platforms, the Salvage Corp, and a sunken treasure.

General
Leafless Golf
<youtube>RYWSiESzLv4</youtube>

1) Have your sword out in Link's hand, and get damaged by the first thorned wall. During your invulnerability, re-approach the wall to one of the first 3 gaps between thorns, and jumpslash forward diagonally (approximately 15-45 degrees) into the right thorn, so that you get re-hit near the peak of your jump. You may space and time this manually, or if you are knocked backwards, you may do this by immediately rolling into one of the valid gaps after you get up, and then immediately jumpslashing (with the correct ~30 degree angle). You will be damage boosted to the other side of the first wall.

2) As you come around the corner, run slightly inward alongside the left side of the left Deku Nut (if you run alongside it parallel, you have the chance to adjust inwards slightly before you reach the wall). Roughly when Link's left foot is on the border of grass and stone, straighten out your running angle to be parallel to the edge of the course. Get damaged by the thorned wall, and while downed, adjust your camera to be parallel to the edge of the course if it isn't already. During your invulnerability, hold up and roll when Link passes the dark line on the floor. You will roll along the edge of the island around the second wall.

3) Stand Link inside the gray markings on the edge of the course, behind the dark black line on the floor before the final wall. Use first person mode to look parallel to the edge of the course, towards the right side of the Deku Nut, and then jumpslash. You will be damage boosted to the other side of the third wall.

Troubleshooting:

1) Try to aim where you take damage at on the wall, to be at the middle of one of the thorns; this will help you not get knocked sideways towards one of the invalid gaps, and being knocked backwards gives you the most flexibility in your angle. If you sail from Outset Island, you may accidentally lure one of the seahats to interfere with your L-targetting; either take the time to defeat it to avoid having your angle skewed, or you may frame-perfectly press L and A together to jumpslash without turning to face it.

2) The point of the involved setup is because so many things can go wrong on this roll. Your goal is not to jump off the ledge and land back on the course, but to not go off the course in the first place. The angle Link is knocked back is based on the positioning of where they touched the thorn, and not their movement angle:

* If taking damage pushes you off the course, you didn't adjust inwards enough to touch grass with your left foot.
* If you are too far inward on the course to roll along the black line after taking damage, you spent too long holding inwards before straightening out or adjusted too far inwards.
* If Link jumps off the ledge next to the thorn and does not reach the other side, your angle was too far from parallel while rolling past the thorns, OR your roll input was either done too soon after getting up from knockdown, or done too late (roll startup makes Link wider, and the extra width can push him off the course).

3) The spacing is lenient, but it is easiest at the point where the grass spreads inwards. Your goal is not to go over or around the thorn, but to deliberately get hit in the middle of it.

Checks
Play Golf
Original Item: Treasure Chart 28

Type: Island Puzzles

The "horseshoe" of this island consists of three holes marked by flags. Link must use Leaf to blow the Deku Nuts into these holes. Vines will block Link's way, so each hole must be completed to move on to the next. For the first hole, pick up a nut and toss it over the vines. You can use the Leaf to blow it into the hole. Do the same for the second hole. For the third hole, vines will block access to the nut. Link will have to stand behind the vines and use the Leaf to blow the nut. Note that the Deku Nuts will wither and respawn after a while. Once Link completes the last hole, a chest will spawn in the middle of the island.
Cave
Original Item: Treasure Chart 8

Type: Combat Secret Caves

Enter the secret cave after the third hole and by the Old Man Ho ho. Defeat the two Mothulas and the Winged Mothula inside to spawn a chest.
Northwestern Lookout Platform
Original Item: Skull Necklace

Type: Lookout Platforms and Rafts

Step on the switch on the southeastern lookout platform to spawn a chest on the northwestern one. Then, climb up the northwestern lookout platform to get the chest.
Southeastern Lookout Platform
Original Item: Golden Feather

Type: Lookout Platforms and Rafts

Step on the switch on the northwestern lookout platform to spawn a chest on the southeastern one. Then, climb up the southeastern lookout platform to get the chest.
Sunken Treasure
Original Item: Silver Rupee

Type: Sunken Treasure

Open the treasure chart for Horseshoe Island and salvage up the treasure using the Grappling Hook. Without randomized charts, the chart for Horseshoe Island is Treasure Chart 9.

<small>Data collected by Cryze and JarheadHME (Obtained from ZeldaSpeedRuns and modified to match the Randomizer values)</small>

All of these values are taken directly from in-game memory addresses. Speed is measured in units per frame. Each quadrant of the ocean is 100,000 units.

Note: Techniques such as Rolling, Crawling and Sidling along walls have been modified for the Randomizer, so their data might differ from the vanilla game or work differently in the Randomizer. Check out their respective sections for more info.

Rolling
Rolling is the fastest way to move on ground in the game, especially if you chain them constantly with no steps in between them. There's a 2 frame window between each roll in order to keep maximum speed (See the values above). It's also important to try to cut as many corners with each roll as possible. This is made easier with the Notches on the Gamecube controller.

To roll, you need to hold a direction on the analog stick, then press the A button, Link will then roll to the direction you were holding on the stick with an animation that can not be interrumpted. If you collide with certain walls or objects during this animation, you will bonk into it, losing all your speed and entering an animation that loses a little bit of time.

It's important to note that rolls have been modified in the Randomizer to be basically the same as the rolls in the HD version of the game, where they were improved by reducing the minimum speed of a roll from 5 to 20 units of speed, making them easier to do optimally without losing time.

In some cases where rolling isn't an option (Like holding a bomb or a statue), sidehopping is the preferred way of moving, however, in some cases, setting up for a sidehop might take too long, so you would be better off by target turning or just walking to where you need to go.

Target Techniques
They're performed by holding the L button to target and pressing the A button. They generally make Link jump in some way, so they're used to get on ledges that normally would make him do a slow climb or hop animation instead.

They normally make you move in straight lines, but since they make use of targetting, if there's an enemy or a targeteable object near you, their direction might get messed up since Link will try to turn to be facing towards that object. To avoid this, you gotta press A and target at the same time.

They're very common for a lot of different setups because they keep your initial angle and they make you move at consistent distances.

Techniques
Grapple Skip
This is a trick used to skip the first grappling hook post on the way to Ganondorf. It primarily comprises of getting onto the chain underneath the Ganondorf fight entryway after climbing the rope, and clipping up through the ceiling onto the floor at the top.

Backwards Crawling
<small>Discovered by gymnast86, modified for randomizer by DeanMachine42, made more consistent by PK_Slam</small>

This method involves clipping up when standing after crawling backwards underneath the ceiling. First target against the chain to get an angle even with it, and jumpslash to get up. Once up, turn around completely. If you don't turn around perfectly, you most likely won't end up in the right spot after the next step. If you're having issues getting a perfect turn around, you can use the Wind Waker to do so.

Once you have turned around, do 3 backflips to get into position, then crawl backwards 4 times. During the fourth crawl, release R to stand up, and if done correctly, you will stand up on the floor above the chain. This is generally inconsistent, but can be made more consistent with a slightly different set of crawling movements. First crawl backwards 3 times instead of 4, then crawl forwards and back again 3 times, then crawling backwards one last time and standing up after the crawl instead of during. Here's a summary of the full crawling movements for it: Back, Back, Back, Forward, Back, Forward, Back, Forward, Back, Back, Stand.

<youtube>2QKGXRol0dg</youtube>

Shield Backflip
<small>Discovered by TrogWW, modified for hammer and weaponless by Melonzy8 and JarheadHME</small>

This method utilizes a strange quirk in the game's behavior which prevents you from being crushed by a ceiling while backflipping as long as you are shielding. If you are within a small range of about 2 units near the top of the chain, you can backflip while holding shield and you will pop up onto the floor above.

When getting into position, you need to be very careful that you don't move too much, or at all between steps of the setups. Since the working range is quite small, it is very easy to overstep a slight amount and end up out of range. If you clip straight through without popping up top or voiding, then you were between 3 to 5 units too close to the ceiling. If you just void out, you were either more than 5 units too close, or too far away.

Below are the current best setups to get into position using specific items.

Sword
This method is the most common, as you usually have a sword, which is always equipped. The setup goes as follows:

# Target the front of the chain
# Jumpslash onto it
# Turn around
# Backflip 3 times
# Slash your sword once.

<youtube>RRIBYtL6WQ8</youtube>

Hammer
This method is useful for if you're playing swordless mode, and have a hammer. The setup goes as follows:

# Target the front of the chain
# Jump attack onto it
# Roll forward
# Jump attack
# Roll forward
# Turn around

<youtube>D_zRe2tlsHQ</youtube>

There are two important things to note about this setup. First is to make sure you don't do the jump attack too soon after the first roll. Second is to make sure that if you are doing shield rolls to roll with the hammer in your hand ensure you are not holding shield when the roll ends, else you won't move far enough. However, if you do hold R until the end of both rolls, you can instead put away the hammer, start a crawl, and stand back up without moving before turning around. This should leave you in the right position.

Neither
This method is a bit less likely to be relevant to any specific run, but still has its uses.

The start of the setup is a bit more complicated since you can't just jumpslash up. You need to climb up onto it, but this isn't as straightforward as any other ledge. You can only climb up facing diagonally against the chain, which can be somewhat finicky. A way to do it consistently is to target against the chain, stand off to one side, then pause-buffer an up-diagonal analog stick input towards the other end of the chain. This should make you grab the ledge of the chain consistently.

The steps for getting into shield-backflip position are as follows:

# Roll forward
# Turn Around
# Backflip 1 time
# Roll forward
# Backflip 2 times

<youtube>rx5PifxejSc</youtube>

There's one extra thing to keep in mind with this setup, and that is just to not roll too soon after climbing up.

Once in position
Once you have done whichever of the above setups to get into position, all you need to do is target, hold shield, and do a backflip. Do not release shield until after you have already landed. This should clip you through the ceiling onto the floor above.

Checks
Maze Chest
From the starting position, go:

# Back
# Left
# Forward
# Left
# Right
# Forward
A common mnemonic that runners use to remember this is "D LUL RU" (Down, Left, Up, Left, Right, Up), where "Down" is behind Link's starting position and camera, and "Up" is in front of him.

There are two types of Secret Caves: Combat and Puzzle.

Combat
By randomizer logic, all Combat Secret Caves require an item-based method of dealing damage to complete them (except for Rock Spire Isle, which will provide one for you in the form of a Deku Stick). As some items that normally deal damage are incapable of damaging various enemies, in-logic sword substitutes are listed alongside any normal requirements for a cave in the event that you do not have one. Substitutes may be displayed as a category, which includes:

Standard Damage: Skull Hammer, Bombs, Bow

Darknuts: Skull Hammer, Light Arrows

Morths: Boomerang, Hero's Bow, Hookshot. (Morths are killable with Bombs, but it is tedious and not required by logic)

Dragon Roost Island
Uses the "temple" asset style, and has a looping hub room with load zones between each door. Features early game enemies. Located under a destructible rock by the Wind Shrine.

Entrance Logic: Requires Bombs or Power Bracelets. Can be skipped via Rock Skip.

Swordless Logic: Standard Damage

Stone Watcher Island
Uses the "temple" asset style, and has a central hub room with destructible pillars. Features mid game enemies. On completion of each wing, two Darknuts will spawn in the central hub room. Located underneath the liftable stone head.

Entrance Logic: Requires Power Bracelets

Swordless Logic: Darknuts

While this cave does have Wizzrobes, they are unable to summon Morths.

Overlook Island
Uses the "temple" asset style, and has a central hub room with destructible pillars. Features late game enemies. On completion of each wing, four Darknuts will spawn in the central hub room. Located at the top of the island.

Entrance Logic: Requires Hookshot. Can be skipped via Early Cave Entrance with Door Cancel.

Swordless Logic: Darknuts, Morths (skippable)

The Wizzrobes in this cave can potentially spawn Morths which are unkillable by the Skull Hammer. This is avoidable by killing the Wizzrobes quickly or getting lucky, but you may need additional items.

Star Island
Uses the "cave arena" layout. Enemies will enter the arena in four consecutive waves: three Magtails, two Bokoblins, two Green Bokoblins, and two Moblins. Located on the southwest lobe of the island, under the destructible rock.

Entrance Logic: Requires Bombs or Power Bracelets

Swordless Logic: Standard Damage + Boomerang, Hookshot, Grappling Hook. You may have a hard time disarming the first Bokoblin without the Hero's Shield, but it is not required by logic.

Pawprint Wizzrobe Cave
Uses the "cave arena" layout. Spawns a wave of one, two, then three Wizzrobes, which will prioritize spawning enemies when not interrupted. Located on the tallest island, underneath the darkened tree.

Entrance Logic: Requires Hookshot. Can be skipped via Early Wizzrobe Cave with Deku Leaf (and Bombs or Storage).

Cave Logic:
* Requires Hero's Bow or Boomerang or Bombs or Deku Leaf or Skull Hammer (Yellow Chuchu)

Swordless Logic: Standard Damage. You may use Hookshot if you can prevent the Wizzrobes from spawning enemies, but this is unreliable and the randomizer does not require it.

Shark Island
Uses the "cave arena" layout. Spawns continuous waves of lategame enemies, ending in a wave with three different colors of Darknut. Located inside the flame ring.

Entrance Logic: Requires Iron Boots and Skull Hammer. Can be skipped via Alternative Cave Entrance with Bombs or Deku Leaf.

Swordless Logic: Standard Damage + Grappling Hook, Boomerang. You may have a hard time disarming the first Bokoblin without the Hero's Shield, but it is not required by logic.

Rock Spire Isle
Uses underground cave assets. After lighting two torches, a colony of Keese will swarm the cave. Located on the furthest platform of the island.

This is the only combat cave where randomizer logic does not require an item to deal damage.

Entrance Logic: Requires Bombs. Can be skipped via Alternative Cave Entrance with Deku Leaf or Door Cancel.

Horseshoe Island
Uses the Forbidden Woods asset style. Contains a Winged Mothula and two Mothulas. Located at the end of the golf course.

Entrance Logic: Requires Deku Leaf. Can be skipped via Leafless Golf.

Combat Puzzle
(This cave will only be in logic when Combat Secret Caves and Puzzle Secret Caves are both enabled.)

Boating Course
Uses the "cave arena" layout. Miniblins will continuously spawn until three crystal switches are activated. Located on the northern island.

Entrance Logic: Requires Deku Leaf or Hookshot. Can be skipped with Early Cave Entrance.

Cave Logic: Requires Boomerang or Hero's Bow or Hookshot

Swordless Logic: Standard Damage + Boomerang. (Miniblins are killable with the Grappling Hook, but not fast enough to offer any relief from the cave's spawn rate.)

Entrance Logic: Requires Deku Leaf or Hookshot. Can be skipped with Early Cave Entrance.

Cave Logic: Requires Boomerang or Hero's Bow or Hookshot

Swordless Logic: Standard Damage + Boomerang. (Technically you can kill Miniblins with the Grappling Hook, but you will quickly be overrun, as they spawn rapidly in this cave.)
